Group Bike Ride @ Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, Jermyn Trailhead

Enjoy a Sunday afternoon bike ride from Jermyn to Carbondale as part of a Group Ride!

Riders should meet at the Trailhead on Delaware Street in Jermyn on Sunday, September 24 (weather permitting) at 1 p.m. Led by Ken Leibold, the group will ride to Carbondale and back. The ride is expected to last about an hour. There is no fee to participate, but riders should bring their own bicycles and helmets. Riders of all skill levels are welcome. Please note: this route includes riding on streets. Be safe and have fun!

Scranton Half Marathon Pavilion Ribbon Cutting @ Olive Street Trailhead

Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area (LHV) will host a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 9, at 3 p.m. in celebration of the grand opening of the Scranton Half Marathon Pavilion at the Olive Street Trailhead. Trail users and friends of the heritage area are welcome to attend.

Among those offering remarks are Joseph J. Corcoran, Executive Director, LHV; Pat Fricchione, President, Board of Directors, Scranton Half Marathon;  and William L. Courtright, Mayor of the City of Scranton.

The project is made possible through support from: ESSA Bank & Trust Charitable Foundation; Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield; Lackawanna County Community Re-Invest Program Under the Administration of The County of Lackawanna; Margaret Briggs Foundation; Peoples Security Charitable Foundation; Scranton Half Marathon; Sanofi Pasteur; and the Willary Foundation.

Project partners include: The City of Scranton; Heritage Valley Partners; Lackawanna County Commissioners; Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (PA DCNR); and the National Park Service (NPS).

Christmas in a Small Town: The Santa Train @ Multiple Train Stations

On Saturday, December 2, Santa Claus will leave his sleigh at the North Pole and come to town early on a train! Six local communities will celebrate Christmas in a Small Town when Santa arrives aboard a special train provided by Steamtown National Historic Site. The Santa Train will arrive at local train stations at the following times:

  • 10:30 a.m. – Carbondale Train Station, River Street, Carbondale
  • 11:35 a.m. – Archbald Train Station, Pike Street, Archbald
  • 12:20 p.m. –  Jessup Train Station, Church Street, Jessup
  • 1 p.m. – Queen City Train Station, Lackawanna Avenue, Olyphant
  • 1:45 p.m. – Dickson City Train Station, Boulevard Avenue, Dickson City
  • 3 p.m. – Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton

Families are encouraged to assemble at the train station in each community to welcome Santa as the train pulls into town. At each stop, Santa and his friends will greet all of the children, hearing their lists for special Christmas wishes. After visiting with Santa, families can enjoy refreshments, live entertainment and special activities.  The Santa Train and its crew will be available for photo opportunities at each station. All activities are free. Train rides for the public are not available at this event.
