About the Northeastern Pennsylvania Trails Forum
The Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) Trails Forum is an emerging alliance of trail organizations and advocates. It provides an opportunity for trail groups, government agencies, and individuals to meet, network, and partner together on trail development and trail-related issues. The NEPA Trails Forum also promotes the development of a regional trail and greenway network.

About the Workshop
Agenda pdf
This workshop, the second in a series, will bring together leaders in trail development to discuss key issues. Each session will focus on a core presentation and then open up for Q&A and a lively discussion. The workshop will include plenty of time for networking and talking one-on-one with DCNR representatives about mapping your trail and funding opportunities.

  • A Regional Trail System: What is the Vision?
Our individual trails are popular with local residents. Yet research shows that longer, more connected trail systems attract day and overnight visitors who will make a significant economic impact on the local communities. Can we develop a vision for connecting smaller trails to establish a cohesive regional trail system, one that can be marketed as a major statewide and national destination for outdoor recreation? As we look at our trail network, how can we promote a connection to the trails systems in New York State and New Jersey?
  • Public Awareness of Our Trails: Getting the Word Out
Your trail is a wonderful public asset, but does everyone know about it? Do you have a marketing plan or are your outreach efforts hit-or-miss? What methods are effective? This session will cover how to successfully promote your trail in a rapidly changing world.
  • Working with Volunteers: Get Dirty and Give Back!
Volunteers are essential to our trails. They are our best advocates, and often provide a much-needed source of labor for work on our trails. How do you engage volunteers? How do you develop an active and engaged corps of willing workers?  And how do you use volunteers for trail building and maintenance?
  • Walking Tour Options
After lunch, participants will have the opportunity either to go on a walking tour of the Downtown Scranton Riverwalk, the newest section of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, or to join a tour of the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, a magnificent building designed by noted architect Raymond Hood. Both tours are included in the cost of registration.
  • Update Your Trail on ExplorePATrails.com
Curious about how to get your trail on DCNR’s trail website, www.ExplorePATrails.com? Do you need to update the information about your trail on the website? Sign up for a meeting with Kent Taylor, mapping specialist with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
  • One-on-One Meetings with DCNR Representatives
Are you interested in applying for a DCNR C2P2 grant? Do you need some advice on your trail project? The workshop will include plenty of time for meeting with your DCNR regional advisors - Dennis DeMara and Lorne Possinger.

History of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Trails Forum
LHVA hosted the first Northeastern Pennsylvania Trails Forum Workshop on July 29, 2010, at the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton, PA. Forty seven people participated in the workshop, representing fourteen trail organizations in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Each trail organization gave an overview of their trail project and identified some of the issues and challenges that they face. The workshop offered an opportunity for trail organizations to:

  • Meet each other, network, and learn about other trail projects in the region.
  • Share information about their organization's trail project.
  • Understand how each project fits into the larger trail network in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
  • Discuss an alliance of regional trail organizations.

Presentations of Trail Projects from July Workshop (Some pdf’s are large files and may take time to open.)
