TRAIL UPDATE: TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS THE FOCUS OF 2011
In 2011, LHV embarked on a program of major repairs and improvements to the existing sections of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail. These improvements included repairs to existing fences and gates and the installation of new fencing on the Scranton Riverwalk, the CNJ Trail, and the Mid-Valley Trail, as well as the installation of trail furnishings - pet stations and trash and recycling receptacles - at key locations along the trail. The improvements increase the safety and comfort of the trail for our trail users.
The work was performed by J.J. Wasko Construction of Olyphant, PA. Funding for the project was provided by the National Park Service, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and the LHV Trail Maintenance fund.
Scranton Riverwalk and the CNJ Trail – Olive Street to Elm Street, Scranton
The trail from Seventh Avenue to Elm Street in Scranton had a number of damaged sections of fencing repaired, as well as five gates that were either repaired or re-installed. Seven pet stations and trash/recycling receptacles were installed at Olive Street, Seventh Avenue, Broadway Street, and Elm Street.
Mid-Valley Trail – Archbald, Jessup & Blakely
Five gates were repaired, and large boulders were installed at several locations along the trail to block unauthorized motorized vehicle access. Six pet stations and trash/recycling receptacles were installed at Laurel Street in Archbald, River Street, Winton Road, and Bridge Street in Jessup, and Depot Street in Blakely.
NY O&W Trail - Carbondale Township and Mayfield Borough
Two pet stations and trash/recycling receptacles were installed at the trailhead at Meredith Street in Carbondale Township and at the trail section’s terminus near Old Plank Road in Mayfield Borough.

Three pet stations and trash/recycling receptacles were installed at the Homestead Street trailhead in Simpson, at Route 247 in Forest City, and at the intersection of Norton Hill and Boro Street in Union Dale, near the office building of the Rail Trail Council of NEPA.
