Bicycle Maintenance Workshop @ Lackawanna Heritage Valley Headquarters

Ken Leibold, an experienced bicycle mechanic and cyclist, will present free bicycle maintenance workshops at Lackawanna Heritage Valley Headquarters this fall. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays, September 27 and October 4 at 6 p.m. at 213 South 7th Avenue, Scranton. Learn how to repair a flat tire in the first session on September 27, and practice making brake adjustments and correcting wheel issues in the second session on October 4. There is no fee to participate, but pre-registration is required as class size is limited. Participants are encouraged to bring their bicycles to the session – we have plenty of room! National Public Lands Day Group Bike Ride @ Blakely Borough Recreational Complex

A Group Bike Ride on the Trail will be held on National Public Lands Day (Saturday, September 30) at 1 p.m. (weather permitting). Riders should meet in the parking lot of Blakely Borough Recreational Complex, on the corner of Keystone Avenue and River Street, in Peckville. Led by Ken Leibold, the group will ride north along the trail and then loop back to their starting point. There is no fee to participate, but riders should bring their own bicycles. Enjoy a Sunday afternoon bike ride from Jermyn to Carbondale as part of a Group Ride!

Riders should meet at the Trailhead on Delaware Street in Jermyn on Sunday, September 24 (weather permitting) at 1 p.m. Led by Ken Leibold, the group will ride to Carbondale and back. The ride is expected to last about an hour. There is no fee to participate, but riders should bring their own bicycles and helmets. Riders of all skill levels are welcome. Please note: this route includes riding on streets. Be safe and have fun!

Global Tastes of Scranton: Syrian Women Share Their Culture @ Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple

Hosted by The University of Scranton Office of Community Relations, Global Tastes of Scranton: Syrian Women Share Their Culture will be held on Saturday, October 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, 420 N. Washington Ave., Scranton.  Members of the Syrian refugee community will create a “pop-up restaurant” sharing their home cuisine and traditions. A sampling of authentic Syrian fare will be served, including kabsa, kibbeh, grape leaves, hummus, tabbouleh, & for dessert- Halawet El Jibn!  Vegatarian options are available.

The event will also include highlights of Syrian culture with special music and dance performances, and information about the current refugee crisis. Proceeds will benefit refugee resettlement efforts by Catholic Social Services and future Global Tastes of Scranton events. Tickets are $35 per person. Bonfire at the Iron Furnaces @ Scranton Iron Furnaces

The Seventh Annual Bonfire at The Iron Furnaces will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the historic Scranton Iron Furnaces, 159 Cedar Avenue, Scranton. A fundraiser for the Anthracite Heritage Museum, this event explores the roots of Halloween in Celtic culture and celebrates other cultural autumn festivals while highlighting the region’s industrial past.

This year’s event will feature music by Light Weight, fire twirlers, face painting, fire hooping, tarot card readings, a balloon artist, a hands-on activity by the Everhart Museum, live theatre, the ceremonial lighting of the bonfire, and food and beverages.

Tickets include admission to the festival and $5 in Bonfire Bucks, to use towards food, beverage, and activities. Tickets are $15 online or $20 at the gate.
