LHVA Committees Strategic outreach and an ongoing engagement of the public are vital parts of the work of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority. LHVA has created several ongoing committees to give partners and the public a voice in shaping LHVA’s programs and projects.
The Heritage Valley Roundtable The Heritage Valley Roundtable is a monthly breakfast meeting of managers and decision-makers representing heritage assets and sites throughout the Lackawanna Valley. A unique collaborative venture, Roundtable members from federal, state, county, municipal, and private nonprofit organizations share ideas and best practices. Directors of the Albright Memorial Library, the Anthracite Heritage Museum, the Center for Anti-Slavery Studies, the Electric City Trolley Museum, the Everhart Museum, the Lackawanna Coal Mine, the Lackawanna County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Lackawanna County Library System, the Lackawanna Historical Society, the Lackawanna River Corridor Association, the Scranton Cultural Center, Scranton Tomorrow, Steamtown National Historic Site, and other key community organizations are all at the table.
The Conservation Alliance The Conservation Alliance is an umbrella partnership of local conservation groups that work for better communication, collaboration and partnering to further environmental conservation in the region. LHVA facilitates this regional group in partnership with the Lackawanna County Conservation District and Lackawanna College’s Environmental Institute. The forum focuses on environmental issues and public environmental education programs, and helps LHVA develop innovative environmental projects for the community such as the Environmental Career Forum, the Environmental Education Fair, and the “Community Connections to our Watershed” program.
Scranton Riverfront Partnership LHVA and Scranton Tomorrow are spearheading a consortium of civic organizations, governmental entities, and private citizens to develop a Master Plan for the area surrounding the Lackawanna River in downtown Scranton. Funded by an LHVA grant obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Partnership has retained the firm of Wallace, Roberts and Todd (WRT) to review and plan best uses for the Scranton Riverfront Heritage Greenway. As the gateway to the 40-mile Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, the Greenway serves as the keystone for expansion of Scranton’s downtown business district, encompassing recreational, cultural, residential, and commercial development in a vibrant new district for shopping, entertainment, and tourism.
The Educational Advisory Council LHVA sponsors an Educational Advisory Council to bring people from diverse backgrounds and professions together to discuss educational projects and programs in the community. This quarterly forum strengthens LHVA’s existing initiatives such as the “Traveling Trunks” and “Museums as Classrooms” programs. It also allows the partners an opportunity to share the best practices from their experience and current work, and it helps LHVA produce new high-quality, innovative projects.
