Their Vision Helped Shape the Lackawanna Heritage Valley

Twenty-five years ago, a group of visionary individuals collaborated to plan and create an organization that would be dedicated to preserving, promoting and developing the region’s history, cultural heritage and natural resources. The result was the Lackawanna Heritage Valley (LHV), an organization that eventually would be designated the first Pennsylvania State Heritage Area. Today, there are twelve state Heritage Areas throughout Pennsylvania. In 2000, the United States Congress named LHV a National Heritage Area, recognizing its significance in the history of the nation.

LHV will celebrate its 25th anniversary at a gala event on September 8 at the Olive Street Trailhead of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, one of the great accomplishments of the Heritage Area. The Gala will honor Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn who led the Task Force of more than 400 citizens in 1991 to turn the vision into reality. A Founders Circle also will be established, which will include twelve Charter Members whose efforts were integral to the success of LHV: Ray A. Alberigi, Raymond Angeli, Alex Camayd, Governor Robert Casey*, Joseph J. Corcoran, Deborah A. Darden, Robert F. Durkin, J. Glenn Eugster, Harry D. Lindsay, Congressman Joseph McDade, D. Allen Sachse, and Alan Sweeney*.

In order to commemorate the occasion and to tell the story, a Legacy Keepsake will be produced, featuring the people and businesses that make the Lackawanna Valley a special place from generation to generation. Sponsorships and ads in this bound edition will highlight the legacy and achievements of companies, organizations, families and individuals whose efforts helped shape the Lackawanna Heritage Valley.

Reservations to the gala are $100 per person. All proceeds benefit Lackawanna Heritage Valley. The deadline for reservations and sponsorships is September 1. The advertising deadline for the Legacy Keepsake Book is September 16.

The 25th Anniversary Gala is made possible through the generous support of community-minded sponsors including The Times-Tribune and Gertrude Hawk Chocolates.

Volunteers are organizing the event under the direction of Community Co-Chairs Matthew and Christina O’Brien Haggerty and Joseph and Bridget Kosierowski. Honorary Chairs are United States Senator Bob Casey and Pennsylvania Senator John Blake.
