Heritage Explorer Bike Tour Has A Route for Everyone!
The inaugural Heritage Explorer Bike Tour will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010. The Bike Tour is a non-competitive family-friendly bike ride for riders of every age and skill level. Individuals, families, and groups of friends can all enjoy the ride on the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, the Ontario and Western (O&W) Rail-Trail, and the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) Rail-Trail, while cycling through the quaint communities along the Lackawanna River. All proceeds from the bike tour will fund the on-going development of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail.

Bike Tour Routes
The Bike Tour offers four routes at 5, 10, 20, and 40+ miles. Each loop begins and ends at Mellow Park in Peckville, PA (click here for directions). The routes will be clearly marked with arrows, signs, and markers. Volunteers will be stationed along each of the routes to direct cyclists, particularly at busy road intersections and turn-around points, and to assist participants at rest stops.

Riders will choose one of four courses based on their level of experience.

  • The Archbald Limited / Beginner Route (5 miles) – Click here for a Cue Sheet of the route
  • The Powdermill Express / Family Route (10 miles) – Click here for a Cue Sheet of the route
  • The Carbondale Special / Intermediate Route (20 miles) – Click here for a Cue Sheet of the route
  • The Wildcat / Enthusiast Route (44 miles to Union Dale; ride at your own risk as far as you would like on the trail) – Click here for a Cue Sheet of the route

The shorter routes on the Bike Tour are perfect for beginners, seniors, and families with children. The longer routes will suit intermediate and experienced cyclists. The tours will travel on a mix of rail-trails and quiet roads through the communities along the Lackawanna River. The Bike Tour will feature rest stops on each route showcasing Northeastern Pennsylvania's coal mining and railroading history, as well as its beautiful natural resources. Cyclists will enjoy continental breakfast before the ride, water and snacks at the rest stops, and a light lunch at Mellow Park following the Bike Tour's completion.
